Fiorentina vs Juventus

Fiorentina vs Juventus : Just who you want to play when you’re at your most feeble. Well, so much for a match against lowly proving a springboard. Fresh off a frightfully dull Derby dell’Appennino, return home to welcome the hated . Dating back to the founding of Serie A in 1932, these two have met 174 times, with Fiorentina holding a W37 D56 L81 record in those matches, with a -95 goal difference. Over the past 10 meetings, the Viola hold an alarming record of W2 D1 L7, including a in this fixture last year which included scoring against his former side and celebrating like he’d won the of everything.

Fiorentina vs Juventus Live

The ref for this one is Daniele Orsato of Vicenza, who’s generally considered one of Italy’s top officials. In 6 Serie A matches this year, he’s handed out a whopping 35 yellow cards (but no reds) and 2 penalties. He’s generally pretty quick to the book, so we may be due for him to unleash some fireworks. In 29 matches under his watch, Fiorentina are W9 D7 L13, which hardly inspires confidence. In the 4 clashes against Juventus he’s handled, the Viola have lost 3 and drawn 1. We last saw him when the good guys at .

The match will be played on Saturday, 3 December 2018, at 5:00 PM GMT/12:00 PM EST at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence. The weather forecast is for a cool, cloudy day. There’s a slight chance of rain, but it should be an absolute cracker for a bit of the fitba.

How bad is it in Florence? Quite. Fiorentina have drawn their past 5 matches, scoring just 4 goals, and haven’t won since the end of September. The attack and midfield look broken. and it feels like years since that 5-1 win over . Make no mistake, this is a team that is rapidly hitting crisis levels, and Pantaleo Corvino and the Della Valle brothers have to be thinking about making some changes at the top. After all, 18 points and a 10th-place berth in the league can’t be what the brass expected after some significant salary outlays this summer.

Manager Stefano Pioli may be without captain Germán Pezzella (hamstring), which would be a serious blow to his plans. That could mean that is in line for another start; after his struggles against Bologna’s Federico Santander, the prospect of seeing the ex- man face down Cristiano Ronalo and Mario Mandžukić is rather unappealing. Further forward, the mister could opt to hand Marko Pjaca a chance to prove his mettle against his parent club, which could well jump start the moribund winger’s season, but that’s a big if.

Expect more of the same from Pioli, whose inability to vary his tactics has been mighty frustrating this year. This could be a perfect match for Bryan Dabo, as has been pretty anonymous all year. Gerson might start on the right wing again, where he looked decent against the Veltri, which means that Chiesa could operate on the left against João Cancelo; the Portuguese fullback’s defense has been much better than advertised this year, but faced with Fede cutting in and on the overlap, that wing is probably the best hope for a Viola breakthrough.

It must be miserably boring to support this side as they continue their sterile excellence. Undefeated thus far and having taken 13 points from their past 5 matches, the Juvenuts have already opened an 8 point gap between themselves and nearest followers . They’re also assured of qualifying for the Round of 16 in the and are likely to win their group; with a match against on Friday, a Wednesday clash against Young Boys in which a win would guarantee a Group H win, and the derby against the following Saturday, the optimist might hope that they’ll overlook this fixture.

Manager Max Allegri, however, has been doing this for long enough to ensure that his charges take every game seriously. Even with (leg), (illness), Sami Khedira (ankle) and Bernardeschi (groin) uncertain, the troll-faced mister can call on plenty of quality all over the pitch and should be confident in his side’s talent advantage at pretty much every spot on the pitch.

It’s always tough to predict how Newcastle Junior will play. They may opt to keep the ball early, pin their hosts back, and try to get a goal or two so that they can shut things down by halftime. Alternatively, they could sit back and let the Gigliati flail around until they grant the visitors a chance on the counter. Whatever the tactical approach, there’s no question the Bianconeri will be heavily favored.

Gerson or Mirallas or Pjaca, Dabo or Fernandes, Pezzella or Ceccherini; Benatia or Bonucci, Dybala or Costa

Crap. The only positive Fiorentina can take into this one is that they look like they’re going to share points in every match for the rest of the year, so let’s go with a 1-1 draw in which the hosts get outplayed for pretty much the entire match but get one back through , with on the board for the villains. But also, crap. This is probably not going to be fun at all.

Real Madrid vs Valencia

Real Madrid vs Valencia : Two of La Liga’s biggest historic clubs, Real Madrid and Valencia have shared many highs and lows over the decades and have faced off on countless memorable occasions. Although the game is always a keenly contested battle given the traditional rivalry between both clubs and their respective cities, fans and players at both clubs have also savoured moments to bring them together. While they picked up a victory in the UEFA Champions League at AS Roma on Tuesday, memories of their last domestic outing will still be vivid. Los Blancos were hammered 3-0 at Eibar, with the team turning in one of their worst performances of what’s been a campaign to forget.

Valencia have endured a disappointing season to this point and were beaten by Juventus in the Champions League in midweek. However, they have shown some signs of life in La Liga recently, with two wins in their last two domestic games.

It’s always an occasion when these two La Liga heavyweights come up against each other. Here are the key details for the match, including the odds, the broadcast details and a preview of what’s to come.

For Real Madrid, a midweek game was ideal after the horror show they turned in at the Ipurua Municipal Stadium against Eibar last weekend.

New manager Santiago Solari watched his side capitulate on Saturday. Not only were they outmuscled and outrun by their opponents, Eibar also played the slicker and more inventive football. In the end, a 3-0 scoreline flattered Madrid.

After the game, skipper Sergio Ramos said he believes the team didn’t show the right sort of application on the day:

Defensively, the team have been especially poor this season, with only one side in the division leaking more goals than Los Blancos:

In truth, they could have been on the end of a similar scoreline at Roma on Tuesday, but some remarkably profligate play from the Serie A outfit—particularly Cengiz Under—gave Madrid a chance.

In fairness to Solari’s men, they grasped that opportunity in the second period, and goals from Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez were enough for the European champions to secure their place in the knockout stages.

Ben Hayward of the Evening Standard noted that for all the issues the team has had this season, they can still pull a performance out of nowhere:

Players such as Bale and Karim Benzema are still popping up with some big goals, too, despite the criticism they have received in some quarters this season. With Isco currently out of favour under Solari and Marco Asensio struggling for form, more onus has been thrust on the experienced duo.

Football writer Dermot Corrigan believes Bale is putting in work for the team, too, after his application was questioned following the loss at Eibar:

Valencia’s chances of progressing in the Champions League were ended after their loss to Juventus in midweek, meaning their focus can squarely be on La Liga now. That may come as a relief for manager Marcelino, who has struggled to juggle European and domestic commitments.

They will go to Madrid and look to play on the counter-attack through some of the vibrant forwards they have. While it’s tough to know what you will get with Los Blancos at the moment, they should have enough to edge this one on home soil.

Southampton vs Manchester United

Southampton vs Manchester United : Southampton take on giants Manchester United at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday in the Premier League. Mark Hughes’ men are battling relegation at the nineteenth place in the table with just eight points and will be looking to make the most out of this home game against Jose Mourinho’s struggling side.

Southampton vs Manchester United live

United come into this game on the back of a goalless draw to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford and a 1-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League midweek. Southampton, on the other hand, come into this game on the back of two consecutive losses- one in the Premier League and one in the League Cup.

Manchester United travel to St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday to take on Southampton as they search for their first Premier League win since November 3.

The Red Devils drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in their last domestic match, after losing 3-1 to local rivals Manchester City earlier in the month.

Meanwhile, Mark Hughes’ side are in the drop zone having gone 11 games in all competitions without a win, in a run stretching back to September 1.

Based on the two sides’ performances in recent matches, United’s trip to Southampton does not scream excitement.

The Red Devils grabbed a late winner as they beat Young Boys 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, but their goalless stalemate with Palace in the game prior was a difficult watch for many, including football writer Liam Canning:

Manchester United are just total garbage to watch. All well and good beating Juventus, but it becomes meaningless when there’s no consistency, identity or game plan in sight. Lifeless once again.

ESPN’s Alex Shaw was similarly damning in his assessment of United:

Up against a side that have scored just 10 goals this season—only Palace and Huddersfield Town have scored fewer—it could be another long 90 minutes for those hoping to see some life in this game.

Neither side is particularly good at defending, though, so perhaps something might give.

United have shipped 21 goals this season, which is the worst defensive record in the Premier League from 13th place up, so the Saints might have more joy than usual in front of goal.

As for Southampton, they’ve conceded 24 and have been largely disappointing since Hughes took charge last season:

If the hosts continue as they have done for most of the season, United should have plenty of opportunities on Saturday.

They’ll need to be much more clinical than they have been of late to capitalise, and they’ll also need to find an intensity and fluidity that has often been lacking this year.

Manchester City vs Bournemouth

Manchester City vs Bournemouth “:Manchester City take on AFC Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday in the Premier League. The leaders are flying in the league and come into this game after winning 4-0 at West Ham last weekend and drawing 2-2 at Lyon in the Champions League midweek.

Manchester City vs Bournemouth Live

Bournemouth, on the other hand, have earned the reputation of being the giant-killers this season, after having secured the eighth position with 20 points already. City cannot afford to get complacent against Eddie Howe’s men although they come into this game on the back of three consecutive losses.

Manchester City appear to be the favourites in this game against Bournemouth. They have 35 points already this season and will be looking to continue their dominating run in the Premier League. Bournemouth, however, will pose serious questions and Pep Guardiola’s men need to be ready to take them on.

Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, as always, will be the dangermen who can break Bournemouth’s back. Supporting them in midfield will be magician David Silva and old warhorse Fernandinho. After last week’s superb showing, Guardiola may even be tempted to play Leroy Sane again.

Defenders Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones have been crucial in City’s domination this season, and they will be hoping for another good showing on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola has hinted he might make changes when Manchester City face Bournemouth on Saturday.

City drew 2-2 at Lyon in the Champions League on Tuesday and, like the rest of the Premier League teams, face a busy month ahead.

With all of their top-six rivals playing on Derby Day on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, City have a chance to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

“It is a really tough game and the Champions League was too,” said Guardiola. “After this game we have another game in three days.

“It is a tough period. Everyone deserves to play and they are going to play.”

City have won all six of their previous Premier League matches against Bournemouth, scoring 21 goals and conceding only two.

The Cherries have also lost 4-0, 4-0 and 5-1 in their past three matches at the Etihad, but manager Eddie Howe is not fearing the trip.

Eddie Howe says his Bournemouth team have to believe they can get their first ever victory over Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday.
Eddie Howe says his Bournemouth team have to believe they can get their first ever victory over Manchester City

“Every time we have gone there we have really grown and learnt from the experience although they have been painful. They have been useful exercises for us during the season and I think we have come back and been a better team for it.

“I don’t think it is damage limitation for us, it is an opportunity for us to create a historic moment for the football club and to do our best in the game. I’d rather see it as a positive challenge rather than a negative one.”

Team news

Manchester City are waiting to assess the fitness of Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan, all of whom missed the match at Lyon in midweek. Kevin De Bruyne is out.

Midfielder Dan Gosling is a doubt for Bournemouth.

Gosling sustained a minor knee injury in the defeat against Arsenal and has not trained this week.

Jefferson Lerma is unavailable through suspension, while Adam Smith (knee) is also an absentee.

Opta stats

  • Bournemouth are yet to win a league match against Manchester City – in 12 previous meetings, they’ve drawn twice and lost 10.
  • Bournemouth are yet to lose an away Premier League match against the reigning champion – they beat Chelsea in both the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons and drew with Leicester City in 2016-17.
  • If Man City avoid defeat, it will be their third unbeaten run in the Premier League of 20+ games – something only Manchester United (7 times) and Arsenal (4 times) have done more often in the competition.
  • Bournemouth have lost their last three Premier League games, all by a 2-1 scoreline. They’ve not lost four in a row since September 2017.
  • The only two games Man City have failed to win in the Premier League this season have been in the only two games in which they’ve failed to score in the first half (1-1 vs Wolves, 0-0 vs Liverpool).
  • Under Pep Guardiola, Man City have scored 125 home goals in the Premier League – three more than Bournemouth have netted in all games in the competition since 2016-17.
  • Man City’s Raheem Sterling has had a hand in nine goals in five Premier League appearances against Bournemouth (7 goals, 2 assists), averaging a goal or assist every 48 minutes.

I think this looks black and white. Bournemouth were unlucky against Arsenal last week, but it’s a different game against Man City. They blow you away so quickly. Do you stick or twist if you’re Eddie Howe? They’ve got the firepower and the pace to have a go, but they could get beaten five or six instead of two or three if they don’t have a go.

It’s very difficult to stay at the top level. It’s the easiest thing in the world to get to the top, but the hardest thing is to stay there. That’s why you have to have great respect for the Man Utd team which would come back every year and just do it again. Pep Guardiola said it would be a failure if City don’t win the Champions League, but I don’t agree. Back-to-back Premier Leagues would still be big.

Leicester City vs Watford

Can Leicester find some discipline and avoid being a man and goal down in a match?

Live from the King Power Stadium at 10 AM ET on NBC Sports Gold

While the Foxes needed a late penalty to earn a draw after losing James Maddison to two quick yellow cards, Watford are recovering from a 3-0 lashing from . With the mid-table at stake, expect a battle from two sides with much history.

The Opposition

The Hornets have only managed one goal in their last three games after scoring in after scoring in six straight to start the season. While their goal scoring has cooled down, their defense has been quite steady, apart from that last match against Liverpool. Watford have kept three clean sheets and limited their opponents to just one goal or less in 7 of their 10 games this season. Leicester will certainly test the Hornets defense as they’ve only been held scoreless once in the league this year.

Troy Deeney drinking some of my leftover tears from the playoff defeat in 2013.

He’s always in the action and up for it against Leicester City. While he’s not as prolific, or cheeky, as , he definitely riles up the Foxes faithful in a Vardy-esque way. Although he hasn’t scored in six matches, Leicester will need to be very aware of his presence in the box and on set pieces.

The Foxes

Leicester rode of a bit of luck in the penalty kick victory over in the League Cup, but maybe that clean sheet and a spirited fight back to earn a point against Brighton from a man down will be enough to kickstart a run in the league. The Foxes are exactly the same amount of points, 10, from the top four as they are the bottom three. While a run for fourth might be a bit far fetched, given are only 3 points ahead and in 7th, there’s certainly a case to be made they should be fighting for sixth place. While it’s not known exactly what the club’s ambitions are this season, a fight for a spot in Europe would definitely excite the fan base.© Photo by Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images Leicester City v Southampton – Carabao Cup Fourth Round

There’s no Maverick quite like Jamie Vardy.

It’s time for Jamie to step up and score more than penalties. While I’m absolutely grateful for each one he takes and scores, even he would tell you he can do more. This is the perfect platform to turnaround his season as everyone in Leicester blue loves a victory over Watford.

The Prediction

Home has been a very friendly place for Leicester this season and home form was what this side lacked last season. I don’t think it will be an easy game for Leicester by any stretch of the imagination, but if they can manage to score first, maybe they’ll sneak a second goal from a quick counter and finish the game out 2-0.

Crystal Palace vs Burnley Live

Date: Saturday, Dec. 1
Start Time: 10 a.m. ET
Location: London, England
Stadium: Selhurst Park
TV info: Online only

After 13 games, Crystal Palace and Burnley are both barely above the relegation zone with nine points. On Saturday, Palace host the Clarets at Selhurst Park, with both clubs looking to pick up a valuable three points and move further from the bottom three.

Palace picked up their first ever points at Old Trafford last weekend when they held Manchester United to a scoreless draw. However, the draw continued Palace’s eight-game winless streak. The Eagles biggest problem this season has been their inability to score goals. In 13 games, Roy Hodgson’s team have scored only eight goals and have been held goalless in seven games. Wilfried Zaha and Luka Milivojevic have combined for five goals this season and will play large roles for Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Burnley were pegged for relegation last season but somehow finished seventh behind an incredible defense. This season, the Clarets have struggled in their only half, conceding 27 goals. To put that in perspective, Burnley allowed only 39 goals all of last season. The leaky defense has Burnley 17th in the table. Johann Berg Gudmundsson has been one of the best players for the Clarets this season. The Icelandic winger has two goals and four assists this season.

Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich

Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich : Bayern Munich will seek to bridge the gap between league leaders Dortmund and get their domestic campaign back on track as they travel to Bremen on Saturday.

Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich Live

It has been a tough season for Bayern Munich so far, who have failed to lay their dominance in the Bundesliga, having already dropped 15 points. As a result, coach Niko Kovac has been under the microscope in recent months and his reign could soon come to an end, should the Bavarians fail to win against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

However, Bayern are coming on the back of a sensational 5-1 win over SL Benfica in midweek’s Champions League fixture. The win will surely serve as a huge boost especially disappointing performances against Borussia Dortmund and Fortuna Dusseldorf in their last two league matches and Kovac will be hoping that his team will be able to continue their winning momentum against Bremen this weekend.

Speaking of Bremen, they have struggled a bit in recent weeks, especially after a thunderous start to the season. In fact, the North German giants are winless in their last three matches and have conceded 12 goals in the last four league games – squishing their excellent defensive record earlier in the campaign.

That being said, Bremen have some firepower going forward and will surely provide a great deal of threat on the counter. And considering Bayern’s susceptible defending in recent months, Die Grun-Weissen will be confident of their chances against the German champions this weekend.

The Hard Tackle, meanwhile, runs the rule over both the sides ahead of their crucial encounter at the Weserstadion on Saturday.

Team news & tactics

Werder Bremen

Switching to a pendulating back three or back five against a strong team has become a trend nowadays and Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt could do the same this weekend against Bayern.

We can expect a 3-4-1-2 formation, where Sebastian Langkamp will be included as the addition centre-back alongside Milos Veljkovic and Niklas Moisander. Theodor Gebre-Selassie and Ludwig Augustinsson will be deployed as the wingback although the latter will likely camp himself in his own half, largely due to the offensive prowess of Augustinsson.

With Philipp Bargfrede out injured, Nuri Sahin will once again be starting at the base of Bremen’s 3-4-2-1 alongside Maximilian Eggestein, who has been one of the most impressive young midfielders in the league so far this season. Eggestein’s incredible stamina will play a key role as Bremen look to implement a high-pressing game in midfield.

Davy Klaassen will be deployed as the lone attacking midfielder, just in behind two main strikers in Max Kruse and Martin Harnik. However, Milot Rashica could play a key role in the second half as his dynamism often becomes useful in the latter stages of the game.

Probable lineup (3-4-1-2): Pavlenka; Veljkovic, Langkamp, Moisander; Gebre-Selassie, Eggestein, Sahin, Augustinsson; Klaassen; Kruse, Harnik.

Bayern Munich

Kovac will be delighted to hear that the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman are almost on the verge of returning to full fitness. However, none of them are expected to feature in this clash.

But, the Croatian mastermind will be more than happy to stick with the same side that registered a 5-1 win over Benfica. Thus, Rafinha will once again start as the right-back while David Alaba starts on the left and in central defence, Niklas Sule will partner Jerome Boateng amid a growing spat between Mats Hummels and the coach.Kovac will once again refrain from starting Javi Martinez as his lack of pace could seriously be exploited by the energetic Eggestein. As a result, Joshua Kimmich will be deployed as the lone defensive midfielder in Bayern’s 4-1-4-1.

Leon Goretzka and Thomas Muller will be deployed further forward, though Goretzka is likely to operate in a deeper role, looking to provide additional support to Kimmich while using his excellent shooting prowess to become a threat from long-range.

Muller, on the other hand, will work around the likes Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery in the final third as the trio look to provide adequate service to the main striker Robert Lewandowski, still fresh after scoring a brace against Benfica on Tuesday.

Probable lineup (4-1-4-1): Neuer; Rafinha, Sule, Boateng, Alaba; Kimmich; Robben, Muller, Goretzka, Ribery; Lewandowski.

Key stats

  • FC Bayern München have kept 3 clean sheets in their 4 Champions League games this season, one more than in their 12 Bundesliga games.
  • In four of the last six seasons, Bayern picked up at least 12 points more than any other team on the matchdays 13 to 34.
  • The Bavarians have also kept six clean sheets in the last seven encounters against Werder Bremen in all competitions.
  • Werder Bremen have lost all of their last 14 matches against Bayern in all competitions.
  • Bayern are nine points adrift of leaders Dortmund heading into Matchday 13. The last time they were this far off the Bundesliga summit was at the end of the 2010/11 season.

Player to watch

Thomas Muller

The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have all impressed in Bayern’s huge win over Benfica on Tuesday. But, it’s Thomas Muller, who has found a real rhythm to his game in recent weeks, especially after the end of the international break earlier this month.

Muller’s return of form could be a huge boon for Niko Kovac and his men as the German international is blessed with the ideal set of qualities that could help the Bavarians bounce back.

Indeed, his ability to carve out spaces using his clever positioning and neat touches is exactly what Bayern require against a side like Bremen, who love to defend in deep blocks.

Prediction

Werder Bremen 1-2 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have struggled to keep regular clean sheets in the Bundesliga and that struggle may continue even though the Bavarians are widely expected to seal all three points in this one, especially after a morale-boosting win over Benfica in midweek.
